We met with the architects again yesterday afternoon and finalized our selection of most of the materials for the house. The selection of these materials was driven to a large extent by LEED compliance, as we are working on achieving silver certification under the LEED for Homes program. Here are a few of the material samples for floors and countertops as well as tile in the bathrooms:
Some LEED relevant green building materials shown in this photo are:
- Countertops made from 100% recycled glass in a cement matrix by IceStone (@IceStoneLLC on Twitter)
- Recycled surface material from post-industrial scrap waste (fine flake aluminum milling scrap) by Alkemi
- Bio-Glass countertop material from 100% recycled glass by Converings Etc
- Bluestone flooring that is locally sourced (i.e. within 500 miles) from Devonian Stone of New York
- Cork flooring by Duro Design
We also reviewed drawings of the spiral staircase in the library, which is going to be built from steel and glass and will be quite spectacular. You can see some of the drawings in the above photo, too. The one on the right looks like something that Leonardo da Vinci could have drawn. But I checked the margins: no mirror-writing.
The wood discussion is still open, though. We have a pretty good idea regarding the floors and doors, but are still looking into some interesting options for the cabinetry.
